Customers Want Solutions

A nice piece by Howard Tullman of 1871, describing the ever-growing necessity of delivering solutions rather than products:

Once you start thinking about a solution for a given problem like transportation – how, for example, do I most efficiently get from here to there – you start to focus on a broad range of available choices for intermodal movement (planes, trains, buses and Ubers) rather than on the need to rent or own a particular vehicle.

That’s true not only for businesses that want to compete, but also for governments that want to deliver more value to citizens.

King County’s Best-run Government priority tries to deliver services using this solutions-driven thinking. That means delivering more services with existing resources. That means trip planners that aren’t limited jurisdiction or mode of transportation.
